Overview

To facilitate the establishment of a substantial distribution centre, HVSS undertook the intricate process of diverting a privately owned network and water supply and replacing this with new infrastructure. Four privately owned substations were removed along with 1000m of HV cable situated on an overhead gantry and replaced with two new substations in addition to HV cables laid underground, that feed two large factories. 

Challenge

HVSS were required to conduct diversions, disconnections and extensions to existing private water mains and the HV network as well as public networks. Minimal disruption in a busy industrial park with businesses expecting little or no interruption to their water operations was of the utmost importance. The teams presented a solution by conducting a private water main diversion and disconnecting existing parts of the main to allow construction and demolition to continue. 

The water main records proved to be a challenge due to the limited access and maintenance in addition to the unknown route of the large water main. Safety on-site was of utmost concern given the operating conditions and technical challenges; due to the size and weight of the new fittings, a thorough risk assessment was carried out. These were able to be fitted safely and efficiently by mitigating all identified risks at the planning stage. 

Solution

After servicing the RMU (Ring Main Unit) and extensive testing of the network from the primary substation, HVSS achieved a significant milestone by installing and testing new electricity and water mains out of hours. The facilitation of multiple teams and relationship management were vital factors, as various partners were carrying out different methods concurrently, reducing the shutdown period for businesses. Full and extensive as-laid drawings were captured by HVSS following the work, superseding any old documents and future-proofing the network.


The process employed, involved all of the team at HVSS continually needing to reflect on strategies employed and minmise disruption. Our solution enabled businesses to sustain operations with negligible downtime while guaranteeing a continuous water supply.
