Banbury Place is located just outside Wolverhampton city centre with great access to the M5/M6 for commuters. The development consists of 365no. domestic dwellings and HVSS were asked to provide gas and electricity to the site from a high voltage and low-pressure point of connection.


The client was offered a point of connection by National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) which consisted of upgrading an existing substation and offering 4no. LV points of connection (POC). As the substation was located at the rear of the development, this solution did not work for the clients’ phasing plan. The POC locations were crossing third party land which meant that agreements were needed prior to commencement of works which impacted heavily on the completion of works.


HVSS worked closely with the client to develop a solution whereby HVSS sourced a non-contestable offer of our own from NGED. This involved challenging the offer NGED had provided and negotiating a HV POC at the site entrance, negating the third party consent issues and aligning with the clients phasing plan. This solution led to minimal off-site works required, saving on client costs, negating the dependency on NGED upgrading the existing substation.


This solution allowed HVSS to future proof the development for eventual electric car charging loadings. The 11kV POC avoided the need for any third-party legal implications, or unplanned costs which could have been significant had the negotiations with NGED not been successful. 

HVSS were primary in driving the negotiations with NGED to offer the client value engineering. The relationship and trust between the engineer and client enabled the client to have full confidence in HVSS to deliver an efficient, cost effective design which aligned with their project milestones.

Navigating the issues around the third party land consent and negotiating with NGED to avoid unknown costs allowed the Construction team to deliver the project efficiently and effectively.
